I thought the series cut Asriel and Ruta Skadi's past relationship, but I just realized they included a nod to it with this scene (I think).

Young Masriel au [part 6: the green-eyed monster]: in which Marisa gets jealous over Asriel meeting with certain witches in the North and tries to make him look bad in front of her husband. Unfortunately, and to Marisa's surprise, Asriel has been paying attention and likes to play this game as much as she does. He should've anticipated she'd be angry about this. Completely hypocritical of course, since she's the one that's married here. First she couldn't get rid of him fast enough, and now she's acting as if he put her through the worst betrayal imaginable. If she wants to play dirty though, he's more than willing to participate. He's been watching her when she thinks no one is looking. Her daemon straying uncomfortably far from her at times, testing his boundaries. If there are any, that is. she never even flinches. Anyone else would be appalled by the very idea, but he's just fascinated by the science of it. The Northern witches, their magical abilities and way of life have always intrigued him. Marisa seems to be less impressed. Asriel would be lying if he said he doesn't enjoy the look on her face when she realises he knows about her little secret.

His Dark Materials season 3 continues!
These were slightly less grueling although part of it might be that I had a task to work on while watching. I still get the sense that they dragged out every beat with a bunch of additional conversations whenever they could. Maybe that would be more welcome if I was watching this week by week as they were released rather than in a row.
Episode 5:
Oh thank god the mulefa do have their seedpod wheels, just not all the time.
I bet Mary wishes her degree was in botany, zoology, or anthropology, not theoretical physics.
We really speedrun the mulefa plotline in this. I wonder if it's difficult for show only people to follow? I naturally can fill in the gaps without thinking about it too much. The take that Eden is a savanna filled with rollerskating elephants remains bold.
They put Mrs. Coulter back into skirts... the monsters. Mrs. Coulter x pants is the real flagship of this tv show.
Will misgendered his daemon but then immediately switched to "her" when he talked about her being with Pan. Maybe the reminder that Pan is male tipped him off.
Going to the land of the dead and saying 'do you guys want to like. leave' remains a power move. Love a good harrowing of hell/afterlife breakout. The walls being piles of cast off objects from the living world is an interesting addition.
Roger: I've changed. My mom: I got a lot older. Me: It turns out if you die you can still go through puberty. It's part of our torture.
They cut the liar/Lyra bit with the harpies which is a shame. I guess they sort of used it earlier with the guard in the entry area of the land of the dead calling her a liar. Still all the harpies stuff is kind of out of order, with Gracious Wings saving her before they made their deal. Also instead of human heads the harpies look like they are part turtle.
Will and Lyra: languishing in hell Mary: hot girl summer
They sure dragged the bomb thing out. Honestly I don't hate it missing Lyra because the target locked too early, considering 'a ghost magically knows about the bomb and they defeat quantum entanglement by giving her a haircut' was kind of an ass pull. I also don't necessarily hate the rift being the angels retaliating, since it makes Metatron a more major player before his defeat and it makes the increasing loss of Dust a more direct part of the 'battle'. It does sort of undercut so much of the damage to the worlds being humans fucking shit up in the name of the Authority though. The angels in the book really don't do much, and I think that's by design. Also talking to you, Good Omens showrunners.
Episode 6:
Nooooooo not more voiceovers
Ruta lampshades it in the books but really how did Lord Asriel build his massive compound with foundries in like 2 months after crossing universes with nothing but the clothes on his back.
Asriel seeing a giant rift rip open between worlds: clearly this is about me
Mrs. Coulter: Our daughter is dead. Asriel: *read 4:16 pm*
Mrs. Coulter is like what they say about converts being the biggest zealots except she's converted to parenthood
Sergei got sucked into the rift? Ok so they racebent Ruta, made her clash with Serafina as the more violent/impulsive one, gave her the tension with Mrs. Coulter, and then killed her off even though she doesn't die (at least onscreen) in the books. Not a good look, guys!
Adding some Roger/Will active jealousy rather than Roger just sadly observing how close he and Lyra are now while Lyra doesn't even realize it. Suppose that's harder to do in video. But Will are you really gonna beef with a dead kid. Let him have this
Asriel and Iorek talking is show!original but I'll let it slide because it was satisfying to see someone finally hit Asriel
Will's dad finally (vaguely) drops the lore about the wrong world killing you, even if he didn't make it sound fatal in the same way. You guys couldn't have even had him dramatically coughing up a little blood in the last season? That's a classic
IDK why Will's dad got to explain what happens to ghosts while Lyra keeps saying she doesn't know. Babe you have the alethiometer
They didn't have Lee and Will's dad stick around to be a gay ghost warrior duo! I'm genuinely surprised considering how they went out of their way otherwise to give LMM more scenes.
Mrs. Coulter heart to heart with the golden monkey. Golden monkey sympathy arc has been THE most surprising adaptation change tbh. Not even joking about this

You have entered the midnight zone...
Hi, welcome to this blog! This is where I will keep all of the writings that I have written, whether they were requests on my main or alternative blogs. This blog will be multi-fandom, therefore it won’t be centred around one specific fandom only.
BYI/BYF: Asks will be off on this account as this is mainly to publish the works I’ve written. If you want to talk or request something, please send things over to my main.
DNI: Anything in the basic DNI criteria, if you kin/have an IRL of Krul Tepes from ONS, if you ship Mikakrul from Owari no seraph. If you ship Ruta Skadi and Asriel Belacqua from His dark materials. If you ship any of the ninja with Lloyd.
Will write: Character x Character, OC x character(mutuals only), Angst, Fluff, *Some* AUS.
Will not write: Huge age gaps, Incest, Pedophilia/etc, X readers, Smut, Headcanons(I will write you a prompt based off the HC, but I won’t accept requests asking for hcs about a specific character)
My main, in case you’re curious or want to request something(check the fandom list)! @raspberryrumii

Note
slightly cracky but Asriel/Marisa or Asriel/Ruta Skadi
haha that's okay! I don't think it's surprising I prefer Marisa x Asriel, after all my presence in this fandom has been - mostly - about them. Though, I will say that I very rarely would choose Ruta x Asriel, cause I don't care about the witches very much and I also don't like Ruta very much. LMAO this is turning into an 'unpopular opinions' ask game
Marisa x Asriel also follows the ship tropes I enjoy, which is the same as Vera x Lombard: tragic, burns fast, passionate, likely unhealthy.. (it's also why that final abyss scene is probably the greatest mood killer i have ever encountered in my life lol)

Smokey brand Reviews: True North
The Golden Compass sucks. i saw that wet fart when i was younger, on a whim, and was thoroughly disappointed. Sh*t didn’t make a lick of sense to me. That film was my first introduction to the His Dark Materials and it soured me on the entire franchise. Like most of the movie-going crowd because it flopped like a fat man into a public pool. The thing abut that movie is that it felt like another entry into the Narnia Chronicles, and abhor that franchise. I’ve hated them since i was forced to read them when i was in the third grade. They were terrible, and that was before i become aggressively areligious. Afterward? Bro. Suffice it to say, when the BBC adaption was announced, it was hard pass for me. And then my mom got HBOMax.
I was seeing a ton of ads for season two, a strong focus on Lyra and John Parry. Th more i saw of those Youtube ads, i don’t watch television anymore, the more i became intrigued. Eventually, i bit the bullet and did some research on he show, itself. Yo, i was SO glad i opted to give this thing a chance. The cast was amazing. the principal characters, all some of my favorite actors but, more than that, the plot was mad intriguing. It was so clever and unique and so far removed from Narnia wank, it could be considered anti-Narnia almost. How the f*ck did that movie get so much wrong? Suffice it to say, i gorged on that first season like a fat kid gorges chocolate cake. I finished it last night and these are my impressions.
The Outstanding
First and foremost, i absolutely have to praise Dafne Keen in this, man. She is Lyra Silvertongue, heroine and main character of the entire Dark Materials series. This success of this show rests on the shoulders of the then fourteen year old and she carries that sh*t like a champ. There is a wit and wisdom that Lyra carries which belies her age and Keen taps into that effortlessly. She played Laura Kinney in Logan a few years back, keeping pace with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, so i knew she was skilled in her craft but i never imagined she’s be able to carry such demanding fair, so early in her career. I’d say she was the best thing about this show but that’s not really true. The level of quality in this thing is just that profound.
Ruth Wilson plays Marisa Coulter, Lyra’s mother, and, holy sh*t, is she incredible in the roll. Look, i love Wilson, even when she is in less than quality productions like The Affair. That show was bogus. What wasn’t bogus was her stint as Alice Morgan on Luther. I absolutely fell in love with her on that show and Ms. Coulter gives me all of the Alice vibes, just far more cruel. If Alice was calculating and aloof, the Coulter is deceitfully cruel and i love every second of it. You can tell there is a sadistic streak, straight up wrath, just below the surface and Wilson captures that skin deep veneer in a gently terrifying manner.
James McAvoy comes through and delivers yet again with his detached and insidious Lord Asriel Belacqua. It’s always a pleasure seeing this man do his job and, admittedly, he’s not in this first season much but the time that he is, McAvoy dominates. This is a desperate, desperate, man who knows he is right and will do anything to accomplish his goal. This single-minded drive reminds me so much of Sosuke Aizen from BLEACH and, like Aizen, Lord Asriel literally threw away everything to achieve that goal. It’s wild seeing Professor X go full Magneto and love it!
Line-Manuel Miranda is in this as the snarky Lee Scoresby, Texan Aeronaut, extraordinaire. Look, Manuel is a brilliant artist, i can’t take that away from him. He’s exceptional in Hamilton and on the stage but that’s a completely different skill set. There is a way you have to perform, to project, on stage that doesn’t translate to film and Manuel is still trying to get a handle on that. He’s not terrible in this role, mind you, but he’s just serviceable. However, the chemistry he has with Keen is something special. You can tell they get along strongly and that genuine interactions shines through in their performances together.
The rest of the cast is just as strong, specifically Kit Connor and Joe Tandberg as Pantalaimon and Lorek Brynison, respectively. Ariyon Bakare, Clarke Peters, Anne-Marie Duff, Lucian Msmati, Amir Wilson, Ruta Gedmintas, Will Keen, and Lewin Lloyd all turn in incredibly strong performances, for what they were given. A lot of these characters deserved a bit more screen time, a bit more fleshing out, but i am okay with what we did receive. This ain’t their story, it’s Lyra’s.
I just need to take some time and praise this show for how properly gorgeous it is. I mean, the level of production on this thing is rather profound, you knew that in the opening scene during the flood, but moreso as the world begins to expand. I know a lot of this stuff is filmed on sets and what not but, my goodness, are they elaborate and detailed. That whole arctic run was brilliant. It’s particularly intriguing when you understand how well the CG effects were used in regards to budget. The whole “show don’t tell’ adage definitely comes into effect for this serial and it’s all the better for it.
I am absolutely in love with the narrative, man. Never mind the actual plot in the books, the adaption presented is one of the best I've seen in a long a while. My goodness, the world being built is so enthralling, so captivating, i hate that i slept on this show, this series, for so long. I understand that this is one interpretation of the novel events but I'm still infatuated with every second of it.
The writing in this show is on point, for sure. It feels organic, it feels real. I know this is a series of books, decades old, but that goes a long way to proving the pedigree of this adaption. This doesn’t feel out of place or trite or try hard. It works beautifully, except for when Manuel is delivering dialogue outside of his scenes with Keen, and that is a real joy to watch.
There is a distinct focus on diversity displayed throughout this show so far and i love it. This is a reflection of the world in real time and more, big budget, shows need to show this reality. The difference between this and, say, Disney Star Wars or current Doctor Who, is the fact none of the representation in Materials feels forced. It feels organic, intrinsic to a story about entire worlds. You need this level of diversity for this story to be taken even remotely seriously in the modern day and i commend the production for handling this so well.
The Okay
I’ve never read the books so i can only judge this thing on what i glean from the wiki and what i see in the show. While i am completely smitten with what has been resented, the show feels like an abridged version of what we get in the books. I know for all adaptions that’s true but this feels like a legit highlight real of the greatest hits. I can’t say for sure but the adapted screenplay feels like it’s trying to load up on plot as much as possible, in as short a time as possible. Makes for an interesting view but, as a cat who understands storytelling, it feels like a patchwork of content.
This thing has some pretty brisk pacing. Again, i don’t know from where this first series is adapted but it definitely feels like they were in kind of a hurry to get. I mean, it really doesn’t but once sh*t gets started, it never looks back at all. It feels like that, at certain times, we should have definitely sent more time on an interaction or with a relationship. Lyra’s time in the Magisterial and Bolivar, particularly, seems rushed to me.
It’s uncomfortable how many times they make Dafne get naked. Obviously, they don’t show anything and it’s all inferred but, like, gross.
The Verdict
I loved this show, man. Absolutely adored every second of it. The BBC, when it really wants to, can produce some brilliant film. Luther, Sherlock, War of the Worlds, are all favorites and now His Dark Materials can be confidently added to that list. This show is gorgeous to watch, the production values on full display. Sweeping cinematic vistas both real and composite, permeate this rather cleverly effect heavy adaption. The performances, alone are enough to keep you coming back for more but this is, genuinely, one of the most gorgeous shows I've ever seen. Speaking of performances, everyone is excellent but the anchor is definitely Dafne Keen. Her Lyra Silvertongue is the linchpin of this entire show and she bares that weight brilliantly. I forget sometimes that she’s only fifteen, especially considering the talent she with whom she shares the screen. Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda all have capitol roles in this first season and they relish their time on camera, especially Wilson. I’ve been a fan of hers since that brilliant run on Luther as Alice Morgan so seeing her, here, has been giving me the best type of deja vu. His Dark Materials is f*cking outstanding, man. I can gush about this thing ad nauseam but this essay would definitely turn into a novel and no one wants that. If you have HBOMax, definitely give this a go. It’s one of the best shows out, has a full eight hours to binge in season one, and another four, so far, in season two. Sh*t is dope and i highly recommend a proper watch.

Why do I "hate" Chara and why Shipp the Asriel x Frisk?
English ( Google)  Why do I "hate" Chara and why Shipeo the Asrisk? Ok, several times people are disturbed or bothered by my refusal to Chasriel, I remind them that everyone is in love and a DISTORCED version of chara, the character as such does not show enough of himself to take care of him, the only thing we know about him / she is that she hates humans, manipulate everyone to the point of committing suicide and using Asriel to kill humans, (whether or not it is a personification of the player we leave to interpretations, we go to what strictly appears in dialogues of the game) It is a personification of evil no matter what route you take, even in the pacifist Asriel makes it clear that he is NOT A GOOD PERSON, instead he sees in Frisk a person with whom he would have liked to live and be his friend. ok, you have the right to identify with the EDGY and adolescent feeling of hating the world, you also have the right to fall in love with the distorted versions of a child who loves Asriel, as many are in love with distorted versions of all the other characters, you can take your own interpretation of a character and create a distorted version to contribute something, an extra, an AU, a fanfic, an alternative ending, etc.
therefore, ragnartale is my creation DISTORING the characters to the interpretation that I want to show, for my interpretation chara is only evil personified and without clear justifications, I take my liberties and create my own version of the character, which is even much more human than the original, give the story and the past that I want, but do not come to impose me to match the versions they know of other people, that simple. IT IS MY VERSION, enjoying or not reading it: 3.

THANKS AVERY
6. Answered here
7. List your NoTPs from each fandom you’ve been in.
Let’s have the SALT. (Mandatory disclaimer that my own personal feelings towards the SHIP does not inherently extend to the shippers, that I ship many dynamics that some people would call “abusive” given the ongoing debate over what “enemies to lovers” means, and that some dynamics here are things that I might have shipped under other circumstances, but things just...didn’t work out that way.)
Cats - I hated Plato/Victoria before I even knew that it was POSSIBLE to hate a ship that much. I always went with the Plato = Macavity theory to get that little skeavy dudebro off my girl. (Also, I’ll be honest, the whole “mating dance” thing is...such a fucking weird sequence anyway. Like, my ship preferences aside, ALW WHY DID YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SCENE WHERE THE CATS FUCK?)
Pirates of the Caribbean - Jack Sparrow/Elizabeth.
Harry Potter - Ron/Hermione. I never saw it, tbh, and they seemed to be pretty bad for one another, even in the books. The films just took it up several notches.
OUAT - Captain motherfucking Swan. I hated that smug, greasy little motherfucker so much. So much.
Star Trek Ds9: Jadzia/Worf. THERE. I SAID IT. Both sides brought out the absolute worst in each other, leading to an absolute trashfire of a ship that obliterated all in its wake. AND THEN WE HAD TO DEAL WITH THE FALLOUT OF THAT. EVEN AFTER THE SHIP WAS *DEAD*. Don’t mind me, don’t mind me. I’m cool, I’m cool.
Carmilla - Tbh...Laferry. Never my thing. I know that her character development’s a BIG part of Perry’s arc and I fully embrace character growth, but it just. Left a bad taste in my mouth. And the way shippers used to treat Laflashdrive shippers back in the day. As if shipping a nonbinary character and a flashdrive somehow makes it hetero. (#LetLafBeaRobotfucker2k19).
Les Miserables - You know what? While I’m on the Salt Train...
Enjolras/Grantaire. Now, there are plenty of ships that are probably more deeply annoying to me, but none are as prevalent as this one. And I might like them a lot more if they WEREN’T so prevalent. But as it is, it’s like a black HOLE that’s devoured the fandom, so that you’d think the entire fucking novel/musical is about these two. And. Maybe I shouldn’t talk given what I ship, but it isn’t even like they’re THEM at this point, they’re just two generic white guys in an “uwu” relationship. And I’m not speaking for EVERY single thing given that I have neither the time, concentration, or will to read every. Single. Thing. Made about these two, but it’s something I’ve noticed, though I’m not saying that I haven’t enjoyed SOME things made about them and the whole “You believe in nothing.” “I believe in you” is...good content.
It’s like...you’re walking in the woods (there’s no one around and your phone is dead) and you see a brightly colored pink tree. At first, it’s great. A pink tree! You’ve never seen one of those before. You wander further into the woods, and there’s another! And another! And soon enough, you’re surrounded by pink trees, in a technicolored horror realm. Where’s the sky? Where did you come in at? You think you remember seeing the sun once, but NO, it’s another fucking pink tree blocking your way. There is no God, there is no ground, there is only a technicolored nightmare blocking your every move, drowning you in visions of Barbie-esque horror.
Terra Nova - Skye/Lucas. WHY GOD WHY? Look, we KNOW I have terrible taste in ships, some of which have...questionable dynamics. BUT EVEN I CAN’T GET INTO THIS ONE. There’s no...mutual spark between the two of them, just Lucas creeping on Skye and Skye trying to get away. Also, since I’m here...Skye is estimate to have been born in ‘32-33, making her approximately 16-17 by the time the plot kicks into gear. Let’s be very generous and bump her into 17-18. Lucas? 2124, making him...oh, 25. Not the WORST age gap I’ve ever seen in my lifetime...but....questionable. Very questionable. And I know the series wants to have us believe that people grow up faster (see: The fact they actually think Maddy’s old enough to GET MARRIED. TO A SOLDIER. WHO IS REALISTICALLY IN DANGER OF MAKING HER A WIDOW,) but NO. Like, at my CURRENT AGE, with less than four years separating me from that age gap, I can’t see it. That is still at least 7 years of experience in the “real world” that she doesn’t have. He still saw someone with THAT MUCH of an age gap with him and WANTED something, whether or not she wanted it or not, and tried to PURSUE that something while calling her “sister”. Like, I can’t stop anyone from shipping it and I have a firm “ship and let ship” mentality, but....EW. EWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWeWEEWEWEW.
B5 - I’m in the same boat as you as far as...on one hand. Byron/Lyta makes me want to vomit, but also...our Teep OC does owe her existence to her weird, hetero white goth uncle.
Star Wars: Han/Leia. Because, as we all know, cornering a woman before you kiss her is the love story of the generation. Han would have been better with Luke and Leia with Holdo.
The Pirate Queen - Tiernan/Gráinne. I. Hate. This. Ship.
His Dark Materials - Torn between Ruta Skadi/Asriel and Lyra/Will. Tbh, leaning towards the latter because while the former is AWFUL and signifies the quite frankly terrible writing decisions that distinguish the second and third books, at least it didn’t involve a badass, feral girl child becoming a dainty, submissive 50s housewife in the body of a 12 year old. “Oh, Will, I’ll do whatever you say, I promise. I won’t use my awesome powers unless you say I can, you’re so fantastic, Will.” Gag me. Also...they’re twelve. This doesn’t HAVE to be an epic, tragic romance, and the fact that their “kiss” (WHAT THE FUCK PULLMAN, WHAT THE FUCK, I’M NOT A PURITAN BUT WHAT THE FUCK) is the key to saving the universe? Really? Basically, they should have been friends.
1789 - Danton/Solène. (I KNOW WHAT YOU THOUGHT I WOULD SAY, BUT NO. MY HATRED FOR THIS ONE MANAGES TO OUTSHINE IT.) “But Rachel,” you might say, “You’ve been very, very open about preferring anything to Ronan/Olympe” and that’s TRUE. But the Toho version managed to push my hatred of this one with The Scene, AKA “Go back to the kitchen, Solène and let the menfolk take care of this.” The French version didn’t even really have it as A Thing, he was just a customer. And the amount of time Danton spends with Solène is always directly proportional to the amount of spinal surgery she’s going to have. Now, I can’t exactly BLAME the two Japanese productions for doing what they did, because they have to appeal to a Japanese audience in the way they see fit. It’s an ADAPTATION of 1789, not a tour of it. But that doesn’t mean I have to LIKE it. And. Like. You know there’s no way THAT one’s going to end in a way that’s good for Solène. Either (1) he’ll set her aside for his family or (2) If they SOMEHOW stay together...the Reign of Terror’s looming.
Also: Danton/Charlotte. No. No. Just. No. There are so many reasons why. But no.
Ace Attorney - Maya/Nick. WHY SWEET MOTHER OF HETERONORMATIVITY WHY?
10.  Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?
We’ve both discussed a lot about how...DIFFICULT it can be to write fic for something. There are a lot of things I love dearly but just don’t have it in me to write fic for. Ace Attorney is an obvious one, Mozart l’Opera Rock, Elisabeth (though I’m trying to work on that one), Les Miserables, Star Wars, Star Trek, B5....a ton more that I could mention but it would honestly take too much time. Words hard, reading still hard but slightly easier.
21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?
The first thing I ever wrote, when I was five years old, was (very heteronormative) fanfiction for The Stinky Cheese Man, where he finds The Stinky Cheese Woman, which now, of course, I recognize as my own attempt to write myself into a narrative from which I’d been excluded. Or something. I think my mom still has it buried someplace, lurking...
Also, @theocraindora at some point managed to get me to write at least one full Carmilla AU during the second season, when we both must have been about 17-18-ish, if my math’s not too dubious, and that was the first thing I ever actually finished for a long time, even though it didn’t ever meet my personal standards for publishing and is likely to stay buried. For awhile, at least.
23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.
Since I talked about PLP’s tragic backstory, time for something happier. Paradise Lost, which I’m actually pretty damn happy with because it was my first time working with something that’s not a historical piece, and it was honestly a treat working with Mira’s voice. I think that Mira really “clicked” for me as a character here. Like, “Yes, this is why she’s like this, this makes sense.” There are some times where you can really feel a character’s voice when you’re writing and you can get things out, and this was one of those very rare times for me. Not saying that it’s going to happen NEXT time, but this time, it was rather relaxing.
It was honestly one of the smoother writing experiences I had? Like, it only took me about a day or so, from when we exchanged PMs to publishing it, which is pretty impressive, all things considered. I’m still not tossing out doing anything more with this world in the future, tbh. That and Goosefic were probably two of the easiest to just...get out. (WHICH. 92 HITS. GOOSEFIC HAS 92 HITS. THAT IS INSANE FOR A ONE-SHOT IN A SMALL FANDOM. HOLY SHIT.)
(From your other ask!)
50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?
I’ve been WRITING fanfiction since I could hold a pencil and make scribbles.  When I was younger, I could write that kind of thing easily, the shame came later.
Finding out that fanfiction EXISTED...was probably when I was about 9-10 and found Balto x Harry Potter crossover fanfiction. Which. In hindsight. Was pretty horrible, but my young self was CAPTIVATED because Balto and Harry Potter? In the same universe? IT WAS LIKE MAGIC.
Astonishingly, I did not read M rated stuff until I was at least 15-16-ish. I kept myself remarkably sheltered and only looked into it when I became curious. And got over my weird hyper-religious phase.
When I was about 12-13, I started to toy with writing myself, writing my own OC crossovers for Phantom Manor (the gother, European version of Haunted Mansion that was my special interest for. Ages). Carmilla when I was 17-18 was one of the first things I wrote a full, complete Thing for, even if I never published anything for it. And from there, I’d try to write things for both The Pirate Queen and Dracula, though both projects proved to be too ambitious and I ended up cutting them off, tragically, but they gave me the confidence I needed to get into 1789, which I DID publish something for finally, on the day I was taking my GRE because. Well. I had something else I feared more than a flame.
51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!
I don’t know if this is one thing or five separate things in a trenchcoat, but here you go.
I love how we can explore things that could never be explored in canon, for one reason or another; I love that we have an experience that we can filter according to what WE want, including trigger warnings, which is honestly a godsend to me. We talk a lot about the transformative nature of fanfic, and it IS, but also, the level of empowerment that comes with being able to take back a narrative that says “hey, you’re not supposed to be in this narrative” or “You’ll like what we put out and you’ll stick with it” or “Well, if you don’t like it, create your own” and say “Okay, I will.” And, obviously the comments are lovely, having that kind of instant encouragement, and in the small fandoms in particular, it’s VITAL, but I also don’t feel like they’re inherently mandatory or that readers should feel FORCED. But I do love that, no matter what, something you write can connect with someone from the other side of the world. Like, people can argue all they want about fanfic being valid or not, but MOST people who want to be professional writers never get that. And when you stop and think about how we’ve been changing the narrative for as long as we’ve had oral stories, that this is how storytelling was ORIGINALLY done...that’s very humbling.

November 16, 2020 at 08:00AM https://ift.tt/32Qod3b Movie Reviews, bbc, bbc one, disney plus hotstar, disney plus hotstar premium, hbo, hbo max, his dark materials season 2, his dark materials season 2 review release date hotstar hbo episode trailer his dark materials
At its coronary heart, His Dark Materials — the trilogy of younger grownup fantasy novels penned by Sir Philip Pullman — and the BBC-HBO co-produced collection named after it and written by Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes), are each about management. In one sense, it is management over data. The shaman-like John “Jopari” Parry (Andrew Scott) crystallises the which means when he first seems halfway by way of His Dark Materials season 2. He notes that there are all the time two teams combating for energy. One, the Magisterium on this case, decides what the reality is, what folks ought to know, and what they will say. It’s a pointed reference made by Pullman in regards to the Catholic Church in historical past. The different, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and his free cohort, desires you to discover and assume for your self.
In one other sense, it is adults attempting to manage kids. From the beginning, the collection protagonist Lyra Silvertongue (Dafne Keen) has been attempting to flee the clutches not simply of the Magisterium, but in addition Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), who was revealed to be her mom in His Dark Materials season 1. The present is chatting with the younger adults on the opposite aspect of the tv, saying that generally they have to take issues into their very own palms. And in one more sense, it is management over sure sections of the populace. Deep into His Dark Materials season 2, Marisa wonders how completely different her life would’ve been in our world. In her world, she was denied entry to a doctorate and her papers might solely be printed if she agreed to let a person take the credit score.
Speaking of Wilson, the 38-year-old Golden Globe-winning English actress is well the spotlight of His Dark Materials season 2. Two scenes stand out significantly as a result of they showcase a susceptible aspect of her character, not often seen within the collection, and since they don’t seem to be about transferring the plot alongside, which His Dark Materials is sadly an excessive amount of about. The first finds her reverse Lin-Manuel Miranda, who performs the aeronaut Lee Scoresby, because it digs into their related upbringings. The moments between Wilson and Miranda go deeper in a single minute than the present does in over 200 minutes elsewhere.
The second wordless scene is together with her onscreen daughter Keen, and places a reverse spin of kinds on the torture scene from His Dark Materials season 1, the place Marisa set her golden monkey daemon free on Lyra’s ever-changing daemon “Pan” Pantalaimon. Even although it takes place within the midst of chaos, their shared quiet moments are highly effective and revealing, with Lyra realising in actual time how she’s turning into her mom in entrance of her. But these moments are all too uncommon, and His Dark Materials season 2 is quite a bit much less highly effective and revealing when it is left to the younger adults to hold the present.
From Ludo to His Dark Materials, What to Watch in November
But the larger downside for His Dark Materials season 2 is that it by no means actually kicks into gear. The new season opens with a foreboding message — Asriel’s portal-opening actions have left the world in chaos, which the witches consider is the “start of a powerful prophecy, one that could destroy all existence or make it anew” — however then it takes without end organising the items on the board. A brewing warfare ought to add some heft to a TV present, however there isn’t any momentum, no intrigue, and no sense of foreboding on His Dark Materials season 2. The glacial tempo is not sensible whenever you’ve a seven-episode season in your palms to start with. Critics had entry to 5 episodes. It appears to be like beautiful — season 2 was partly filmed on the island of Kauai in Hawaii — however it’s inert.
His Dark Materials season 2 opens with a distraught Lyra, who blames the truth-telling magical machine alethiometer for the dying of her buddy Roger Parslow (Lewin Lloyd), sacrificed by her father Lord Asriel to open a portal into one other world on the tail finish of season 1. Having adopted her father by way of the portal, Lyra arrives in an eerie and mysterious metropolis of Cittàgazze. It appears to be like a bit just like the island of Korčula in Croatia, and it sits subsequent to a bigger peninsula, however it’s completely different in that every one the homes are crowded on prime of one another on Cittàgazze and the land subsequent to it’s solely devoid of any human presence. It makes little sense, however His Dark Materials season 2 by no means bothers to elucidate why that’s. But extra importantly, Cittàgazze appears to be a ghost metropolis itself, with nobody to be seen.
The first human Lyra meets seems to be Will Parry (Amir Wilson), who has travelled from our world and could be very stunned to see that Lyra has a “talking animal” together with her. Lyra, then again, wonders why Will would not have one. A human with no daemon? You cannot be trusted. The two ultimately discover center floor as they uncover that they’re from the identical metropolis of Oxford however from completely different worlds. Lyra and Will subsequently meet different kids who reveal that Cittàgazze is empty as a result of it is full of spectres — they’re a like floating black liquid, one thing out of Lost or Fantastic Beasts — that suck all of the humanity out of individuals. The caveat? They can solely assault grown-ups. Only one grownup is left in Cittàgazze, who lives in a tower that has no seen entrance.

Meanwhile, again in its unique world, the Magisterium is scrambling to place a lid on the portal disaster, with information spreading that it is a gateway to a different world. Marisa gives her companies and guarantees to unearth data out of a captive witch in Magisterium’s custody, for witches have all the time claimed there are different worlds. And now, it has been revealed to be true, irrespective of how a lot the Magisterium’s prime officers wish to reside in denial about it. But simply as Marisa is about to extract the total prophecy from the captive witch, fellow witch Queen Ruta Skadi (Jade Anouka) attracts first blood in what can be a warfare towards the Magisterium. The ever-scheming Marisa makes use of that to plot a Machiavellian coup, utilizing Father McPhail (Will Keen) as her pawn.
Thanks to Lyra and Will’s world-hopping adventures, His Dark Materials season 2 spends much more time in our world than season 1 did — and plenty of it entails Dr. Mary Malone (Simone Kirby), who research darkish matter on the University of Oxford. There is quite a bit much less display time for Scoresby, who’s looking for a weapon that he’s instructed can assist shield Lyra, which he has made his life’s mission having failed in doing so in season 1. Though he would not understand it, the weapon he is in search of is the identify of the second e-book His Dark Materials season 2 relies on: “The Subtle Knife”. That drives the collection into one other chosen-one fantasy trope, as was the case with Lyra and the alethiometer in season 1, however it’s not as unbelievable as a result of there’s no less than a little bit of steering concerned.
But His Dark Materials nonetheless hasn’t found out what to do with daemons, which is disappointing as a result of a speaking animal linked to a human’s consciousness is one of the simplest ways to disclose their interior ideas. His Dark Materials season 2 additionally fails to elicit any humour out of them, with the only real exception of a single shot whereby Marisa’s golden monkey sits in a automobile carrying a seatbelt. That — the dearth of humour — is one among some ways His Dark Materials fails to be the fantasy epic for HBO the best way Game of Thrones was.
Of course, His Dark Materials season 2 has larger issues. It would not have a grasp on the right way to develop scenes or plan for the long run. It looks like a type of X-hour-movie” TV exhibits, the place all the season was deliberate as an extended movie. That is annoying by itself, and much more so when it is not accessible as a binge-watch. Since it is a BBC and HBO collection, new episodes of His Dark Materials season 2 will air weekly. (It was initially going to be eight episodes, however a standalone episode centred on Asriel needed to be reduce attributable to COVID-19, and because of this, McAvoy is absent from season 2 solely.)
His Dark Materials Season 3 Is in the Works
Tumblr media

Originally concocted for the Harry Potter period, and now remade for the post-Game of Thrones period, His Dark Materials is caught in an id disaster. In season 2 — the halfway level, if producers get their wish to show the third and remaining e-book “The Amber Spyglass” into two seasons — it is nonetheless attempting to find what it is meant to be. Its multiple-worlds conceit turns it into sci-fi on a literal stage, however metaphorically, it is actually about one world: our world. Even as we speak, there are people that refuse to consider in science, and governments that propagate unscientific or pseudo-scientific claims. COVID-19 has solely made that extra apparent. By splitting that throughout two worlds, His Dark Materials season 2 can starkly expose the variations between the 2 sides.
But although it is well timed and related in locations, His Dark Materials season 2 cannot shake off the sensation every thing it makes an attempt has been carried out higher elsewhere earlier than. It’s sifting by way of the mud — pun meant — and the solutions are largely eluding it.
His Dark Materials season 2 premieres November 16 on HBO and HBO Max within the US, and November 17 on Disney+ Hotstar Premium in India. It started airing November 8 on BBC One within the UK.
